Touching The Surface
Dragging myself away from tanning and tending to my tomatoes (hey, who’s smarter than me, lousy tomatoes are 4.99 a pound and getting more expensive) I have been hearing about the FBI raiding President Trumps Mar-A-Largo compound last week. I could try and do some sort of deep, intensive piece on this but I have chosen to just go over the surface.
On the surface this raid by the FBI seems to me to be about 75% political and 25% actual investigative work.
The DOJ has had this “stolen White House papers” thing up their craw since President Trump left the White House. Believe me, I don’t doubt the Donald Trump took papers that probably should have been left for the National Archives. If I recall, he has been fighting with them for months about some of the stuff he took from the White House.
OK. Maybe I am naive but, big deal. I am sure every President who has ever left office has taken papers that were important during their Presidencies. How in God’s name do you fill all those multi-million dollar Presidential Libraries.
I have no idea what was in those boxes and I can bet you that President Trump doesn’t either. His staff probably grabbed as much as they could and figured at some point, they would sort through it and see what was important and what wasn’t. The fact that the boxes even still exist tells you no one has even bothered to look through them. Let’s use some common sense here, if there were national secrets in those boxes, wouldn’t someone have destroyed those papers a while ago? If there were papers in there that were detrimental to the Trump legacy, wouldn’t they have been destroyed as well?
Some of those wise liberals believe two things: That there are extremely sensitive classified information in those boxes and there is probably plenty of incriminating evidence regarding the Trump administration.
Hmm, I am no security expert but does it make sense that any president or any White House should have highly classified papers anywhere? Isn’t there some standard protocol about having documents and then destroying them? Like I said, I have no clue but I think what the Democratic leaders think is highly classified is most probably the code to the Executive washroom and not nuclear codes.
Which brings me to another very obvious point: Why now? The DOJ has felt for a long time that there were many boxes of classified documents in Mar-A-Lago and yet, they didn’t subpoena them earlier and the timing was three months before a mid term election that could easily tip the balance of power in DC.
The much bigger picture and the risk that the Biden Administration (you know their hands are all over this) is that there is nothing actionable in those boxes. You have taken the unprecedented step of getting a search warrant to the home of a former President, you better come away with something equally as big. The hatred and fear that the Democratic leadership has towards Donald Trump is almost comical if it wasn’t so destructive.
There are only two scenarios that can legitimately play out here. One, they find all sorts of smoking guns and game changing classified documents that legitimately could cause National Security concerns. Two, they find 17 boxes of useless, unimpeachable information and the investigation winds down.
In the first scenario, they would have to indict Donald J. Trump which won’t be to hard since the indictment will be in Washington DC. This indictment will have to be ironclad and the trial will truly devastate this country. (BTW, to all the squad members, this isn’t Venezuela. To try a former President the standards are much higher) If you think we are divided now, try a former President and see what happens. This may help the Democrats keep Congress but it will ultimately destroy this country.
In the second scenario, the Democrats will lose face big time. Trump will get bolstered by playing the victim and he will announce he is running to make sure “This never happens again” but more so to un-tarnish his name.
Bottomline here is that whoever was pulling the strings on this one, blew it. There is no easy exit from any side and while President Biden has had a couple of key successes and made good on several campaign promises, he will, at the end of the day, completely failed on his biggest promise, to bring this country closer.
