I probably should take my own advice and wade out of the cesspool known as politics but I just can’t help myself. Americans have spoken, they have elected a new leader and tilted the government towards the left a touch. Some of my friends are apoplectic about this shift and they can give multiple reasons why we all should be concerned about the current line up leading our country and honestly, the more I listen, the more I agree with them.
Historically, the first one hundred days of a new administration are about setting agendas and creating a path for that administration to follow. Every President since the early 1900’s has signed Executive orders creating new agendas or dismantling previous administrations policies. This President has continued the tradition and signed Executive orders for a variety of things and I am not sure that he actually read or understood any of those orders.
Case in point, reverting back to Obama administration policies regarding immigration on our Southern Border. What person in their right mind would open up those borders to allow an uninterrupted flow of people seeking “Asylum” in the US?
This is where I may differ from many of my readers in that I do believe that we should have an immigration policy that allows people to legally enter this country and go through legal channels to become valuable members of this society. There should be a well funded process for immigrants to get work visas and eventually apply to be American citizens. Documentation, follow-ups and control of the flow seem to me to be the solution. Strict control of the borders and making sure those that are entering the country legally have had Covid tests and solid plans as to where they may be going would solve several issues. Right wing Conservatives don’t want any immigrants coming into the country because they the potential for losing jobs, criminals entering unabetted, drug smuggling and possibly spreading Covid to communities that have lowered their numbers. Keeping a tight rein on Visas and applicants until they have citizenship should mitigate a lot of those fears. This will not be cheap but since the government has been throwing around trillions of dollars after the last year, they can find the funding for this I am sure since over the next two years, this will end up being the administrations biggest issue and getting it right is essential for this country.
Let’s not forget that immigrants made this country what it is. We have always been a country of immigrants and had fairly open door policy over the years to allow people from all over the World to make a new life here. Presently, the people that want to enter this country are for the most part unskilled labor and they actually take very few jobs from American workers. They provide the backbone of so many businesses that should that supply of workers be cut off, those businesses would suffer as much as they have during the pandemic.
Now before anyone says that I am drinking some left wing socialist Kool Aide let me be clear, I think we should have a very strong, consistent immigration policy that controls the flow of immigrants. What the Biden administration has signed into law is anything but that. It’s poorly thought out, poorly conceived and poorly executed and it is inconsistent with any policy that looks to balance the concerns of the country with the impossible situation these people come from.
Mayhem in the first 50 days.
I could not agree more. Well written hope more people listen. Ernie Villany
