Merry Christmas To All
There, I said it. No Happy Holidays nonsense. Merry Christmas!
It’s Friday and I thought about writing something on great Christmas music but I really do feel that this is something very personal. Memories of great Christmases and bad ones all come back when certain songs come on. Thats the power of music.
Even though I am a closet Grinch this year, I do still believe in the Magic of Christmas. Adults say, “It’s for the children” and that is partially true but adults also like to reflect back on Christmases past and those memories come alive when you hear a “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” by Burl Ives or Mariah Carey singing “All I Want For Christmas”.
I won’t get into the political aspects of a “Merry Christmas” other than to say shame on anyone that doesn’t want to share in the joy that is Christmas. Trying to make Christmas secular is a thing apparently, and it is a thing that should stop. I don’t think anyone should be insulted or offended if someone wishes them a Merry Christmas. I don’t get insulted or offended if someone wishes me a Happy Hanukkah or any of the other numerous holidays that happen at this time of year.
Good for everyone! Celebrate whatever you want to celebrate however you want to celebrate but don’t tell me that it is hurtful or insulting to wish someone a Merry Christmas. It is about joy and who couldn’t use more joy?
Just to show the strength of Christmas I dare anyone to put together a list of great “Happy Holidays” songs against my list of great Christmas songs. I will win every time. That is a fact. For example, my least favorite Christmas song, Band Aid doing “Do They know its Christmas?” is infinitely better than any Happy Holidays song ever recorded. Let’s see some atheist come up with a better song than “Silent Night” or “White Christmas”.
The point is that Christmas is meaningful to billions of people and it should be celebrated as such. It shouldn’t be white washed because people feel that other religious celebrations are marginalized. They aren’t, their music just isn’t as good.
