The Friday before The Super Bowl. Ho Hum.
I’m sorry. I have zero interest in watching “The Game” this year. Zero. Maybe this is fallout from my lack of interest in the Holidays, I just don’t care about it like I used to.
Is it because I am a Raider fan and they have been bad to mediocre for the better part of this century? Perhaps. Is it because it literally is the most over-hyped event year in and year out? Maybe. Or is it because the highlight of the day, the commercials, are for the most part stupid and the halftime show is horrendous. Probably.
And if Verizon trots out any of those stupid commercials, I will turn my TV off and read a book, learn something.
Since my Friday column is about music and entertainment, let’s start with the halftime show. I can’t even recall when there was a great halftime show. Santana? Prince? Michael Jackson? Diana Ross?
Even with that type of talent, I think the shows lacked something. Spontaneity perhaps? Maybe the sound or the overly scripted productions. In any event, it is another part of this “Super Bowl Thing” that is just disappointing.
Last year hit a new low in suckedness (my word of the day). I forced myself to watch this extravaganza and left it feeling that I just wasted another 18 minutes of my life I will never get back. It depressed me. I am not sure that any of the performers actually sang and what they did sing was completely unintelligible. At least when Bruno Mars performed you could understand the kid’s funk.
This year they trot out Rhianna. Popular yes, talented, not really. I used to really dislike Rhianna. Never smiled. Had hundreds of millions of dollars in the bank and adoring fans. Miserable sourpuss. Yuck. Somewhere during her pregnancy I decided, I have to give this girl some credit. She is non-stop building out her brand and doesn’t care if people see her belly bump. She is proud of being pregnant, proud of having that restin bitch face. Because I finally turned a corner on her persona doesn’t mean I think she has any talent. She doesn’t. There probably 5,000 high school singers who have a better voice, better range but she is the one that made it. Go figure. Good for her but I am still not watching.
As for the game. It will be close. These are the two best teams in the NFL this year and they deserve to be here. I don’t make picks anymore because I may be the worst gambler in American history. I will split time watching it and watching the new season of “You” on Netflix. (Which I have started, and it’s horrible but I have only finished the first episode)
One last thing. I used to be a bonafide fan of the game but as the years have progressed I have less and less interest in this game. In the old days it was fun listening to John Madden and Pat Summeral. They got it. They gave you enough to enjoy the game and never too much.
Now, these clowns won’t shut up. The crew for the Super Bowl is not “must listen to TV.” They talk too much, say little of interest and add exactly nothing to the game. It’s Fox’s game and this is their top team but they could have brought along or hired some better announcers years ago knowing they had the Super Bowl this year. I almost wish Al Michaels and Chris Collingsworth were doing the game.
Something to ponder: Over the last few years I have written quite a few negative columns. Columns about politics (easy), columns about business practices (also easy) and of course, the easiest target of them all, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. While you would think I am a negative, grumpy person, I am really not. I am what you would call enigmatic. Hard to figure out. I seem miserable, but I actually am not. I am very grateful for everything I have, Family, friends, health and all my life experiences, good and bad. My column is just a way to vent at times and I do try to make that venting humorous. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
Which brings me something I have been thinking about, doing a Podcast of some sort.
My initial thought was to do something business related. Something that might be attached to the movie project that my former partners and I are working on. Or perhaps keep it to the schedule that my column is on. Three times a week, varying between, business, politics and music. Get a couple of sponsors and become the Joe Rogan of Long Island. Or just do an Andy Rooney type of podcast, five or ten minutes of concise grumpiness. What do you all think? Let me know.
Agree wholeheartedly on your observation of "The Game". A podcast huh, interesting. I appreciate your written assessments of life so I know I'll appreciate your podcast., good idea.
