Common Sense.Part 1
As we watch the news and see the cold snap that is gripping the mid-section of this country, there are some that wonder where all this “climate change” went. It isn’t getting warmer in Plano Texas or Norman Oklahoma and International Falls recorded a temperature of -31 Degrees. So where is Global Warming and why has it bypassed us this year?
I know this will kill my conservative friends but, I do, in fact, believe the planet is getting warmer. The slow increase in average daily temperature is pretty much a fact and we really can’t dispute it. However, what the scientists try to avoid telling you, is that the Earth has gone through periodic increases and decreases in temperature since it was a festering mass of poisonous gases and molten rock so what we are seeing is the natural warming up of the ecosystem. That is also a fact. It is, however, happening faster than previous cycles and thats where we see a divergence of thought.
Scientists and high school kids from Sweden believe that rising temperatures are directly related to the greenhouse gases that we, as a species, have been releasing into the atmosphere in ever increasing amounts. I won’t argue that. I do think we are doing more harm than good to our planet but I also believe that, at this point in time, we don’t have a viable solution to solve this problem.
You have a growing faction that believes some sort of New Green Deal is needed to reduce emissions and bring us more in balance with the planet and I, with no equivocation will say BS.
As the population on this planet continues to grow, we will use more and more resources of the planet to feed, clothe and house this growing population. That means more forests will be cleared, more land will be cleared and the biodiversity of the planet will change. Green Deal or no Green Deal, this happening and there is absolutely nothing we can do to stop it. People will need to eat.
Wait, we can get more food from the same amount of land and thus be able to feed this growing population. Uh, and how does that work exactly? We have genetically modified seeds! No good. We will use better farming methods! Sorry, we are at the peak of efficiency now. Wait, what about organic farming? Thats funny because organic farming uses more land to produce the same amount of food that big commercial non-organic farms use. As you can see increasing food supplies does not work well with any sort of Green Deal agenda. Besides, I haven’t even mentioned, where are we getting all the protein we will need to sustain a healthy society?
The main priority of these New Green Deal idealists is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and while I have no issue with the Tesla’s of the World taking over the roads, I think people should seriously think about the damage the EV industry is about to cause. Start with powering these obnoxious do gooders. Every one of these cars uses enough electricity to power an electric dryer going full blast for two hours and that electricity comes from where? Wind turbines? Ok, it’s calm out, now what? Solar panels? You live in the Northeast, that isn’t going to work. Natural gas? While a lot better than coal or oil fired plants, natural gas fired power plants still produce greenhouse gases, just not as much. With the increased demand in electricity, there will be that increased demand to build more natural gas fired power plants and at the end of the day will we be any better off?
How about the components of these cars? Right now they are using Lithium Ion batteries. Lithium which is mined and that mining has devastated the surrounding areas with pollution and mining waste. It’s ok though because those mines are in Australia and Chile and not in California or Massachusetts.
The point I am trying to make is simple. We will impact the planet no matter what we do and while I don’t have an answer , I do know that we really need to seriously think long and hard before we jump in any trillion dollar proposal to save the planet. The problem is a lot more complex than we know.
