Doing this column over the last few years has been a pleasure. I love getting the chance to express my opinion and not have the FBI come knocking on my door or having the moderators ban my content. To be honest, what I write about is not all that inflammatory and if anyone at Substack decided to block me I would know we are coming to the end of American Democracy soon. What I appreciate more than anything is when people comment on my columns and subscribe. I don’t charge anything and some of the columns are actually pretty funny if I do say so myself.
Trying to get a grip on what happened yesterday in Manhattan should be easy. The District Attorney of Manhattan, Alvin Bragg, unsealed an indictment of former President Trump. You know all the historical context and you probably know all of the details of each count so I won’t go over them but I will say this: Even though the whole thing smacks of politics, there may be some credence to what Bragg has brought up.
However, let me be clear, nothing in those indictments reaches the level of felony and I may be wrong about this but it seems that Bragg is trying to push this into some Federal realm. Which is funny since the Southern District of New York decided years ago to pass on this.
If this was Joe Smith, the DA would not be involved, the prosecutors would not have gone to the grand jury, the whole thing would be a slap on the wrist, community service and that would be it.
The political stink from this is overwhelming.
Here is a District Attorney notorious for letting hardened criminals back on the street to commit more crimes and he is going after the Former President of the United States.
Yup, it’s politics and that is where Bragg and the Democratic party might be overplaying their hand a bit. The case is week. Everyone knows it is and yet they still went after it. Is it because it is in the media capital of the free World? Is it because they want to try and damage Trump now before he has a real chance to build back momentum? Is it because the Democrats, in their hate, have lost sight of reality and think any indictment is a good indictment?
I am going to say it’s all three.
The problem, as I see it here, is that the Democrats may have put too many marbles in too weak a bag and if the bag breaks, Trump will win back the White House. The indictment is weak, most voters know that, and the ones that may have been on the fence will clearly fall back into Trumps camp. Overreach is something a lot of Americans can’t stand and this is overreach in that clear and present form.
The possibilities are something the Democrats may have completely overlooked but they are there.
President Trump gets the whole mess thrown out. Bragg looks like a chump, career over. The Democrats look even worse. Case closed. Trump wins nomination. Beats everyone except Michelle Obama and wins back the White House.
President Trump goes to trial in mid to late 2024. He uses this overreach as a rallying point and the President wins the nomination and the White House while the case is either won, or lost and on appeal. Democrats lose no matter what.
This saga will keep President Trump in the news for the foreseeable future. CNN and MSNBC may love it because their hate draws ratings but it honestly is not good for the country. The Democrats will look bad no matter what happens. The Republicans will either have to fall into one camp or the other.
While I am at it, I am going to throw another idea at you.
It is pretty obvious that President Biden will make an attempt to run in 2024 for reelection. The Democrats love that he is easily manipulated and would love to have another four years manipulating of a doddering senior citizen. The reality though is much harsher for the Democrats. President Biden should not run again and that leaves the question, who then?
Ah, the who question. Kamala Harris? She will lose by a landslide and God forbid she has to debate former President Trump. Ouch. Next? Pete Buttigieg ? Seriously? The guy sucked at his job as mayor of South Bend and he was even worse as Transportation Secretary. The Republican candidate will chew him up and spit him out like bubble gum. Governor Gretchen Whitmer? I can see that one. She is tougher than VP Harris or Pete Buttigieg and she can carry a lot of blue votes. Possibly Gavin Newsome. He may just end up as their choice and having Whitmer as his Running mate (or Vice Versa).
The point is, the Democrats don’t have a deep bench and taking on a steamrolling Donald Trump will make it even harder so why not take some of the steam out of that freight train and bring him to court?
You won’t beat him in the polls why not try a new tactic, tie him up in the courts.
Just postulating here.
Back to the indictments. Several things I just don’t get. Isn’t there a statute of limitations on state charges? Am I missing something? Didn’t this “alleged” affair happen in 2006 or 2007? Why is Karen McDougal selling something in 2016? Michael Cohen, known liar, is the prosecutions star witness? Isn’t the timing of this a little suspicious, since Bragg knew about his intentions several years ago.
It all stinks to high Hell and at the end of the day, how is former President Trump ever going to have a fair trial in Manhattan?
It is just a very sad day when a failure of a District Attorney has to go out and arrest a former President on an extremely weak felony case.
Look, I am not that naive that I think that Former President Trump is a saint. He is not. Stronger cases may be made elsewhere and it should never have come to this in New York. This will cost Trump millions and the City of New York even more. It is stupid and it is pushing people like myself completely over to the dark side. I am like a lot of other moderates that will lean to the right even more because we have seen how low the left can go and it isn’t what we want.
One last note: This case may open a Pandorr’s box that the Democrats may wish to have never have opened. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of Republican elected District Attorneys across the country and all it takes is a couple of smart ones to start digging into Hunter Biden and President Joe Biden and their connections to Ukrainian gangsters, Russian Oligarchs and the Chinese Communist party. You want to see a king topple? Go dig into those connections for real.
You and Cuomo agree on this
